Dotato di una calda voce tipicamente napoletana, arriva al successo alla fine degli anni '50. Incide il primo 78 giri nel 1959. Nel 1960 debutta al Festival di Napoli, dove, nel 1963, è primo interprete del famoso brano "Indifferentemente". Partecipa alle Audizioni di Piedigrotta, al Festival delle Rose '66, a vari programmi televisivi come "Canzonissima", "Scala reale", "Napoli contro tutti". Nel 1965 la prima tournée negli USA.
